NEW YORK Good news on inflation lifted blue-chip stocks torecord levels during Thursday's trading, but a bout of profit-takingwiped out the gains by the end of the day.
The Dow Jones industrial average was down 14.26 points at3,569.09 after climbing to an intra-day record high of 3,594.52, justshort of the magic 3,600-level.
Volume was heavy at 278 million shares on the New York StockExchange, where declining shares led advances 1,076 to 842.
Pressure on stocks also intensified after bond prices shedtheir gains in reaction to a poor Treasury bond auction. Gold stockswere hurt by a slide in bullion prices.
