Girls pole vault is taking off by leaps and bounds in its firstyear as an IHSA-sanctioned event with some athletes hoping itimproves their chances of winning a track scholarship.
Thornwood senior Dashara Wells wants a better shot at college byadding the pole vault to her repertoire. She also competes in thetriple and long jumps and the 200 meters.
She became interested in the pole vault last summer at a USA Trackand Field meet. Wells admits it will take time to get used to thepole vault.
"It's weird to hold the (pole) and get over (the crossbar)," Wellssaid. "The long-jump approach will help me and so will doing pull-ups."
